    💡❤️ soft instructions: slow down

HD version of a portrait oriented video where my disembodied mouth softly sings the following as it floats slowly down the frame (in the opposite direction of our scrolling) and the music slows with each round: speaking slowly helps you slow down moving slowly helps you slow down slow down, slow down chill out chill out pace yourself don't race yourself check yourself embrace yourself _____________________________ Hiya! ** I’m Geraldine Snell but YOU can call me Geri. My creative endeavours help me to navigate being an overthinking, overloving, oversharing subject in our hyperconnected, oversaturated, dopamine-soaked now. I share the fruits of this in immediate, intimate forms with light & love. Much like the compact or phone camera I typically use, I start with myself because I’m never without it. From this everyday, autofiction position, I dabble with a range of tools to capture sublime and mundane moments and insights. Sometimes these live on in writing and video; often they are reactivated through musical performance. These processes make Mind Bile manageable: this is a journey of critical self-optimisation and attention conditioning, and YOU are invited. In addition to exhibition and screening contexts, I embrace digital and social media because they are best placed to house antidotes to the conditions of oversaturation and alienation they can induce. Whether it’s human eyes blinking through an emoji, the grubby phone that draws attention to your own sticky screen, or YouTube tutorials that offer more rumination than instruction, I interrupt image streams and social media zing with intimate works that offer a slow, haptic counterpoint to the speed and slickness around them. I try and encourage Mille & Pippa to respond - as opposed to react - to their environment, but ended up learning a bit about presence from them. 💡❤️ _____________________________ Hiya! ** I’m Geraldine Snell but YOU can call me Geri. 💡❤️ ENJOY NOW: performing presence (breakfast edition!)

Join me as I attempt to be more present during the breakfast mealtime ritual through admiring sunlight slithers, really SMELLING that grapefruit, watching the full duration of the kettle boiling, being jolted into the past by the wistful sight of steam rising from the cup before me, and feebly resisting the phone which urges me to ENJOY NOW as I switch it on. 💡❤️ _____________________________ Hiya! ** I’m Geraldine Snell but YOU can call me Geri. An intimate, slow film documenting my attempt to be more present in nature. In a domestic garden, long shots of passing clouds, swaying branches and lemon balm growing through concrete are soundtracked by improvised melodic instructions from behind the camera. 'overlove' Book / Web Series Trailer

"After a moment of possible eye contact at a gig, my attraction to the band’s drummer - Curt - snowballed into limerent obsession. The unsent letters documenting my crush form the basis of overlove: a non-fiction novella concerned with love, boundaries, leaky jars and the female gaze in today’s context of digital communication, millennial malaise and searching online for something ‘more’." BUY THE BOOK: https://tinyurl.com/y7yxlov7 The episodes of the video adaptation of overlove are posted 2 years exactly after the original letter / diary entries were written ensuring that the timeline of the unfolding narrative parallels the timeline of my crush on Curt as documented in overlove from 2nd November - 4th June AND I'M NOT POSTING THEM ON VIMEO BECAUSE I'M NOT MADE OF MONEY AND CAN'T AFFORD TO SUBSCRIBE TO UPLOAD ~~ yes vimeo is cleaner and there's less chaff and weirdness to trawl through but it really is to YouTube what the trendy, expensive 'mac' is to the mainstream, cheaper pc... so see the series at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIrVNPffgK95zOkt8h8Z8GN8EXIq7GCxn

http://geraldinesnell.com ****a note on when I'm speaking about depression and 'fighting' (kind of self-consciously using that aggressive language here) it, that's obviously only from my own experience of my own particular ways and approaches having had nhs support and medication in the past and being equipped with coping mechanisms and support network/monkey on my shoulder to promote positive routines and be my willpower, in essence. so don't think I'm trying to say it's a case of just 'fighting' at all everyone is different but i guess the main point was I felt positive enough to be able to tame the black dog without medication etc. this time round but there is no shame in not. etc. Kimberly Clark residency: https://www.curatorspace.com/opportunities/detail/open-call---years-of-oui-at-kimberly-clark-uk/1167 further reading (ok so it's water not wine but same applies): http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0178%3Atext%3DGorg.%3Apage%3D493 Black Dog (depression but everyone has some kind of black dog sometimes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiCrniLQGYc

work home dream snow / successful people don't hesitate

Two video works commissioned by Embassy, Edinburgh for an exhibition titled 21st Century Fox in the Snow, which "considered the term rebel cyborg as a 21st century condition or lifestyle choice [and] the use of the homonym 'working' to describe both the ability of our body or cognition to function and simultaneously the condition of being engaged in labour exchange - in particular, as work continues to capitalise on the wilful and increasing digitisation of our lives. The show will ask what it means in our half online/ half offline lives to malfunction as an act of transgression or a means to commit acts of transgression." 'work home dream snow' and 'successful people don't hesitate' were installed together at the show and can be seen as two sides of the same work. The former captures a working weekday evening into morning, the latter a Saturday off filled with possibility. Both combine spontaneously captured footage with more considered shots and a saccharine soundtrack. work home dream snow

I am alone on my Thursday evening shift. No one is in the library. I leave at 8pm and walk a short way through Leeds city centre in order to catch the 20.22 train back to Bingley, where Dec meets me at the station. We walk back to his along the canal towpath, stopping along the way to enjoy the light reflecting on the water. Back at Dec's I attempt to 'wind down' in order to get a proper night's sleep for the following morning, and I soon drift into vivid dreams: the kind that feel eternal when deep within them fleeting and elusive when my alarm blares at 6am the following morning. As usual, I peer out of the window to gauge the weather, but the valley is cloaked in snow. http://geraldinesnell.com

    this perfect spring day

"this perfect spring day" combined idyllic spring time footage and cinematic shots with a voiceover recounting the experience of the heaviness of depression, in second person. The following is an excerpt: "It was one of those days where you wake up heavy, weighed down by some potent force, before you're even conscious of who you are. Your mind catches up, still stuck in the default of the evening before it. You remember how you're failing, so pathetically, to simply be in the world." Screened at 'this can only be thought of as a monologue within a dialogue' 24th March 2017 at Edinburgh College of Art: https://ecafridaylectures.wordpress.com/claire-walsh-suzanne-van-der-lingen-24-mar/

Johann Rohl and I met in GCSE Art at Oakbank School back in '06 (ten years ago in September?!?!). In sixth form I moved school, but we both happened to go on to do foundation at Leeds College of Art. Then Johann studied illustration in Cambridge whilst I did fine art in Edinburgh. Now, in 2016, we are both back home in Keighley and I've made a visit to Johann's studio to have long meandering conversations and capture some of that here. Jouissance (2014)

Combining confessional home footage with gooey crème egg close-ups and immersive music, Jouissance meditates on the fleeting nature of pleasure and the heights of aesthetic bliss. Sitting somewhere between performance, documentary and art montage, this lofty yet visceral exploration of indulgence, a rich tapestry of sound and image, recalls the experience of eating a Kit-Kat Chunky Hazelnut, discovering the truth of Lacanian jouissance (does too much pleasure become pain?) in practice. Music by Kwannon (kwannon.bandcamp.com or soundcloud.com/kwannon) thanks indeed for letting me use it! Also around the 15minute mark the song 'Gathering Storm' by Godspeed You! Basically the last four days in a nutshell, in video form rather than written. All the realisations and musings about pleasure principle, sugar, culture, dissertation topic, art and worry that all this clarity is in fact just mania.
